I’m so excited to tell you about reaching my first 30,000 steps on my FitBit. A little bit of back story first. I started using a FitBit earlier this month for the Walktober competition at work.
Anyone who participates gets a free FitBit Zip to track our steps for the month of October. Increasing fitness AND free stuff? Definitely a win-win situation. When I heard about this, I knew I had to get a team together. I’m all about getting coworkers to do random fitness/health things with me (like that time I became Juice Mom to coworkers on our Semi-DIY Blueprint Cleanse). For this challenge, I ended up recruiting 30 people on my team,ย “Walk it Out!”. Woohoo!
I have to admit, before this competition, I didn’t really “get” the popularity of FitBits. It’s basically a pedometer, which is a bit unimpressive to me. It wasn’t until I really got into the first week of the competition did I realize how helpful it was to visually see how active you are on a day to day basis.
On days where I’m feeling a bit lazy, seeing that I barely hit my 10k mark makes me feel like I need to go walk around some more. It really helps keep you more accountable. Even if it means you have to get off subway one stop earlier to get another thousand, it is a good way to push yourself.
Challenge yourself!
Every week I have been coming up with ways to challenge my team to just do a little more. This last week, I asked my team to try to do what it takes to put them at the next 5k increment. For me, my best day was 27k steps, so I committed to do 30k before the challenge was over.
To put things in perspective, I average about 1k in steps from walking for about 10 minutes, so 30k would take about 5 hours of walking! I was able to get up to 30k by spending 2 hours on a walking desk at work, 45 mins in spin class and ended with a mile run on the treadmill.
If you are a goal oriented person, consider setting up these challenges with your friends. Define some rules and encourage each other to walk a little bit further. This can really push you to walk a little bit more than you would normally.
Lunch
Back to the cleanse, here’s what I had for lunch. I was a bit obsessed with the seared salmon from lunch yesterday, I just had to have it again!
